Most elements of your CPAP setup are fairly durable, but they will wear out over time. Once they are worn out, they become less effective for delivering the therapy that you need.
Here’s a quick replacement schedule to keep on hand and some tips for ensuring your CPAP equipment is always in great working order.
When to replace or replenish your CPAP supplies
CPAP MASK: Most mask manufacturers recommend you replace the cushions 1 to 2 times monthly and the entire mask every 3 to 6 months. You'll need to confirm what insurance will allow.
CPAP HEADGEAR/CHIN SUPPORTS: Replace as soon as it can no longer hold your mask in place.
CPAP TUBING: Replace if holes appear. Leaks in the hose will affect your pressure delivery.
CPAP FILTERS: White paper filters should be replaced at least monthly (or as soon as they begin to turn gray). The gray filters should be replaced every 6 months, or sooner if worn out.
CPAP HUMIDIFICATION CHAMBER: Every six months or as needed.
CPAP MACHINES: Unless it’s not working properly, you should be able to use your CPAP machine for the lifetime of the machine, which averages around 3 years.
Tips for extending the lifespan of your CPAP supplies
- CPAP masks should be washed daily. Avoid using facial oils or moisturizers as these can break down the cushions prematurely.
- Overtightening your CPAP headgear and chin supports will cause them to wear out more quickly.
- Daily cleaning of the humidification chamber prevents mineral deposits and the collection of bacteria.
- Always use sterile or distilled water in your humidifier; tap water or filtered water can damage the components of your CPAP machine.
- Pet danger, smoke, and dust in the home can shorten the lifespan of your CPAP filters.
- Keep all of your equipment away from direct sunlight to prevent damage.
- If your equipment malfunctions, check the power cords or data cards to see if they need replacing.
- In a small notebook, keep track of the dates when you replace your CPAP parts; on a monthly basis, check the state of your equipment and use the previous replacement dates as a guide for planning your next replenishment order to ensure everything is in good shape.
