A sleep study helps your sleep specialist monitor your current sleep patterns and diagnose any sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, and more.
Many of these disorders can only be correctly diagnosed with a sleep test since the symptoms only occur when you’re sleeping.
There are different types of sleep testing available, including sleep testing in a facility, and sleep testing at home, where you can take home a device and special instructions to monitor your sleep.
While you’re asleep, conclusive evidence can be gathered to monitor numerous factors, including:
Sleep testing in a facility requires that you stay in a sleep lab, usually a hotel-like setting, overnight.
In the Sound Sleep Health facility, the room is made to be dark, quiet, temperature-controlled, and comfortable for sleeping.
A multiple sleep latency test, or MSLT, is a test to assess daytime sleepiness. Your brainwave activity is recorded while you nap.
The test usually begins a couple of hours after you wake up and involves a series of five naps taken at roughly two-hour intervals throughout the day.
You’re given around 20 minutes to fall asleep, but if you’ve not fallen asleep within 20 minutes, the trial ends. If you do fall asleep, you’re left to sleep for 15 minutes.
At some point during the day, you’ll also likely be asked for a urine sample, since urine toxicology testing is common for MSLT.
For some people, a home sleep study is a better, more cost-effective way to undergo sleep testing. Many people prefer it since they’re more comfortable in their own homes and more likely to act and sleep naturally.
The in-home test has a couple of simple sensors that measure pauses in your breathing while you sleep. Home sleep studies are primarily used to diagnose sleep apnea and are usually only suitable for a select group of people.
The home sleep test is convenient, and you won’t have to prepare for and travel to a sleep lab.
